Crusader Stadium makes major upgrade ahead of 2021 season
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Mary Hardin-Baylor is known for having one of the nicest stadiums in all of D3 sports, and, this Summer, it’s getting even better!
The stadium’s famous video board was reaching the end of its lifespan, so the McLane family in Temple made a major gift to UMHB to replace the 1,000 square-foot big-screen, more than doubling the size in the process.
UMHB’s Sports Information Director, Jon Wallin, explains, “With their generosity and the gift that they gave, we had the ability to take it from the wish list to the to-do list, so that is what is going on right now.”
The bigger screen with higher resolution will certainly take the gameday experience to the next level for fans, and the players are sure to love watching the replay after making a big play... or even during it.
“We have actually seen it during the plays. There have been a couple of times where we have had people on long punt returns peak up at the video board to see how close the people are behind them, trying to run them down.”
The Cru coaches will also enjoy using the new video board to help zero-in on which in-game adjustments they need to make.
“I am not sure you will ever get Coach Fredenburg to admit that. He is going to tell you that he is laser focused on the game and doesn’t even realize there is a video board up there, but if you were to twist his arm he would say they watch it once in a while.”
The impact of the beautiful new board will stretch well beyond the football program, making for better graduation ceremonies, orientation events, and even laid-back movie nights.
“There are so many events in here that are going to benefit from it, so we hope it will impact, at some point in their career at UMHB, every member of the student body.”
Last Summer, Linfield College in Oregon put in a new jumbotron that was slightly bigger than what the Cru had – with this upgrade, UMHB will once again have the biggest videoboard in all of Division 3.
“We want our program to be the best in every way it can be, and that is not just the product they are putting on the field, but also the facilities they are surrounded with, and the experience they have.”
The Cru says the video board should be ready to go for their home opener against Simpson on September 4th.
Having played against the Cru in Crusader stadium, I must admit the facilities and gameday experience are top-notch!
